You are quite correct. This is all we have to go on:

From the official guildwiki:

Game Release and Beta Testing

Beta testing was originally set for late 2008, but has since been postponed to a date closer to the game's release. The game is thought to be released in late 2009 or early 2010; however, this is yet to be officially announced. If you would like more information on the Guild Wars 2 beta testing and/or the game's release, please see the Guild Wars 2 FAQ page.

From the official FAQ on the GW website:

When is Guild Wars 2 going to be released?

When it's finished. Seriously though, we haven't announced a specific release date yet, but when we do you can get those details and more right here on the official website.

People, don't assume. There is so little known at this time, there really is nothing to be mentioned by IGN.

Anet will have to make an awesome GW2, or else they will fall.
Lucasarts' SW: ToR, Stargate Worlds, D3... we are living in the age of MMOs, so a good marketing could help the current situation a little. These are my personal thoughts, so it's possible that I'm wrong, but this silence about the game is rather annoying for us players.

so what you are saying is have anet spill the beans to satisfy yourself and others? so they spill the beans, then what fun is it. i think its good to keep it all a secret for now. so unless you are in the sales marketing field, be patient.

imo if i was anet i would keep everything a secret till the very last moment then market it. why all the hate against anet? tryin being in anets shoes. i think anet is hilarious and has a great sense of humor

Keep it a secret anet

I dont think any informed player was expecting GW2 in 2009. As far as I am concerned GW is vaporware till I see a screen.

I could care less about the hype most games put out - a good example is Age of Conan. The only problem is that the customers ANET has to impress do care about the hype and do want to see concept art, screen shots, game play videos. With this economy I would not expect much from impulse buyers.

If it is released in 2009, 2010, or 2011 it will still have to go up against stiff competition from announced games that have already started their hype engines. ANET lack of funds may mean they will have to advertise hard right before the game is released.

The statement of Beta close to release has me worried. Sounds like a beta I was on were we told them parts were broken and nothing was done about it.

I think due to all of the high profile shut-downs of many released MMOs (AoC, Hellgate, Tabula Rasa, etc.), ANet is going to play publicity about GW2 very safe. By safe, I mean they will not release any new information about GW2 in until 9 or possibly 6 months away from launch. Let me explain.

Let's look at another AAA MMO coming out soon: Star Trek Online. When was it announced? In its current sure-fire form, August 2008. When will it be released? Definitely by the end of year. This isn't another half-assed MMO either: it carries the weight of one of the most popular and direhard fanbases in scifi, and the features that I have seen are very sophisticated, like automatic planet and species creation for people to discover computer-generated planets with life in the galaxy along with all of the canon star systems and species in place.
Now the Trekkies are much more....vehement fans than GW players are. The continual release of information by Cryptic has been pretty much satisfactory so far, but many fans are upset by some of the decisions they are making about the game. Still more believe that Cryptic won't stick close of enough to canon for the game to be a true Star Trek game. The STO board is often on fire, so much that I don't even look at it anymore.
Even in the light of all this info they are releasing (unlike GW2), the game is still launching ~1 year after its announcement. The time between announcement and launch is shrinking, and I simply think ANet is taking it to the next step. While there is no real proof that they are working on GW2 besides the fact they say they are, wouldn't you want to think they are working on something due to the lack of real work on GW1?....

Just my 2cents.

I believe I'm correct in saying that they had over $50 million invested in GW2. NCSoft isn't going to be cheap with one of its best selling producers.

and this next one is a doozy guys...

3) Anet has released jack SQUAT about GW2 other than some backstory and title logo. Aion has screens and photos, D3 has a huge teaser video, and a "unknown blizzard MMO" is enough teaser as it is. Hell, if the staff of Anet haddn't confirmed GW2 of being real, this could all possibly be some elaborate thrown together history and lore, with a photoshopped title logo!

Anet is getting JUST what they ordered. If they don't market it, no one will care. period. At this rate, a majority of it's fan base has lost hope in GW2, or has at least lost most interest at it, and it certainly hassn't generated buzzworthy news.

Trust me, by the time GW2 comes out, a lot of people who have played GW won't care, and it'll be so completely overshadowed by other games, that it won't generate any new fans.

Please, tell me I'm wrong.
You are totally WRrright. i couldnt say it.

The following scenario is what will lead to the fall of ANet and the fizzle of GW2.

"Hello, i am the average MMO addict. I have been playing Guild wars since its release 4 years ago and honestly i feel that i have done just about everything worth doing. And the game seems to be dying more and more day by day.

I feel like playing a more modern MMO, never liked WoW but it looks like there are lots of nice ones on the horizon. This Star Wars one is getting a lot of positive responses. I may try that one, and who knows, if its fun i might end up addicted to it for the next 4 years. Sorry ANet you missed the boat.

I did hear something about a sequel to guild wars called Guild Wars 2 but the carrot that they dangled is beginning to rot and i am growing impatient. I wonder if any other MMOs dont charge a monthly subscription. Because when it comes down to it, that is the only reason i bought GW 4 years ago."

They really are working on something, or else a company wouldn't pay that much money on 100+ staff (which is where the bulk of the money is, and we're talking 120 to 170 people here). Let them work while we either play GW1, or don't. Judging them at the light of other companies PR strategy won't help one bit, they're not in competition with Activision Blizzard due to their business model.

I was re-reading the PCgamer GW2 special recently and enjoyed it, while I guess it makes some people impatient. The problem does not lie with Anet (yes they made a mistake of releasing this too early) but with people being impatient on this board. Given it's a tiny part of a tiny population, it doesn't matter really. Anet will be judged on what they'll release, not what they say they'll release or even show.

Okay, now this is a mindset I don't understand. If there's two good games coming out, why do you have to choose just one of them? Why not just get both? Because I know that's what I'll be doing - playing D3 and GW2, whenever they come out.

Also, where on earth did this "Diablo is an MMO" thing come from? It's not. It never has been. Just because you can play a game online doesn't automatically make it an MMO.

Sorry, I'm not sitting on a pile of money and my allowance is under $200. A lot under $200. More like $15. Some day you'll understand, that you can't have everything you want.

Besides, how can you say if GW2 is a good game if you haven't seen or heard anything about it except for "plot", which usually means nothing in MMOs? You don't know ANYTHING about the game. If you do, you are lying, because nobody ever has heard about it anything.

Oh, and while there is a proof that Diablo 3 exists and it's doing really well, there is no way to tell where is A.Net's game. Or if it IS, at all.

Funny you mention that "just because you can play a game online doesn't make it an MMO". Then how would you classify Guild Wars? You can't meet other parties outside of server-based towns, and in PvE, 8-12 players in a dungeon/quest is hardly Massive Multiplayer (Diablo 2 had 8, while Neverwinter Nights a year later could support even 32-64 players, up to 98, but connection had to be flawless).

Lose-lose on ANet's part.

No GW2 announcement: "Hay, where's all my new GW1 content!?"

With GW2 announcement: "Hay, where's my GW2!?"

It's not a question of Anet not marketing, or GW2 not being a good game, it's a question of competition. In a world where Blizzard rules the MMO-scene, and you got your hands on a prosporous title (GW), you want to let people know a sequel is comming, BEFORE all the other games/expansion release that is.

How many people will still buy GW2 after they have already set their minds on: The next wow expansion, the next Blizzard MMO (D3), ...
Not many. Especially not with the current crisis going on, it souns cliche, but I don't think people will throw away money just for the sake of it. Hey, GW2 came out, let's spend ANOTHER 50$ on it, even tough we already bought 2 other MMO's...

Won't happen...

You know fully well that given the nature of the community (partly due to the GW business model) they'd end up like this in pretty much 75% of the situations. We've seen it recently with MPB, hats, etc. But we've seen it for 3 years+, the community has a lot of diversity and richness (which is also poorness when you take the bad interaction into account, see for example the PvE-PvP divide). Anet gives, people want.

The thing to remember is that they'll loose people, those that are too impatient or angry, those that will only play one of the big coming games due to the lack of time/money, those that want to make them pay, those that don't trust them anymore. But I believe that not only they'll have the majority of the fanbase buying GW2 when it's out whatever happens between now and then (this is much more people than the active GW player, because a lot of people adapted to the nature of the game, playing it and then leaving it for a while, since they don't have to pay to come back), but there'll be plenty more people coming, attracted by the no-monthly-fee (are D3 and SC2 going to be like D2 and SC as business models?), awesome graphics (and art) running on all PC config, and friends. I'm convinced (don't trust me on this) that they're going to rock the MMO boat, although GW2 will not be what GW1 was when it was released.

No one outside of Anet-NCsoft can predict what will happen, surely not (ex-)fans that only see the tiny tip of the iceberg. I don't care if they haven't showed us anything since May 2007 (19 months), I don't care if Activision Blizzard has D3 and SC2 in the pipe (Wired magazine puts SC2 in its vaporware list, I think it's as unfair as treating GW2 of vaporware), not even if STO, SWKOTOR-MMO, or whatever-cool-MMO comes out in the meantime and takes 95% of the market shares (and media attention). I'll be here for GW2, when it arrives, because I know that it'll be great.

Guild Wars will probably not be here until LATE 2012.

Neither will Blizzard's new MMO. The're not going to start a new game when they have over 10mil player's all aging for new content.

Blizzard will probably wait till Aion and other new MMO's are released to see what they offer. Once the WoW fanbase starts to drop(which isn't going to happen anytime soon). They will start on a new MMO.

Talk about throwing money away cause your on an 'allowence.' What do you think your doing on a $15 a month subscription? Basically buying a new game every 3-4 months during a subscription. I object to that bussiness model on the concept I have already bought the game, and refuse to keep buying the game. I'll play GW 2 when ever it comes out either way, I hope sooner rather then later though.

I still think there a good amount of people who once they buy a game they like, they don't keep playing the game even if a better game might be out there because they already know they like what they got.
I played gw since factions reason and nothing else because i liked the game. Prior to that i played WoW until the patch 1.10 "raid or quit" patch that ended up being the last straw. Gw had already been out for a year, but i never played it because i was content with WoW, until its devs took of dump on my chest.
I think there are alot of people like me who didn't try all the new ARPGs and MMO-like game that come out over the years because they are content with gw. I would like to know progress is being made, because games can fizzle out no matter the publisher (starcraft:ghost anyone?) otherwise if a new game come out that interests me, i'll get that product and play the mess out of it for 2+years.
Their silence make me worry think major problem came out, and them saying nothing only comfirms that feeling.

Kiddo, if you're still getting allowance, then I've understood "you can't have everything you want" longer than you've been alive, most likely. Man, I'd LOVE to have an allowance (never got one as a kid).

My point is, there doesn't necessarily need to be a choice between two games. That doesn't mean you have to get both at the same time. Especially as chances are both won't even be coming out at the same time. Most people aren't going to go "Hmmmm, this game should be coming out at this point, and this will come out at some point later. I can only get one!". They'll be like "Well, okay, I can get this one and then get that one later".

I didn't specifically say you referred to D3 as an MMO, but it has referred to one in this thread, yes.

And I wouldn't say that Guild Wars is a typical MMO, not in the least - which is a big part of what I like about it. However, the fact that it is an online-only RPG makes it one.

What I don't understand - why worry about games that aren't going to be out for years? And would you rather have a good game that has taken a long time to develop or something that's crap because they rushed it because of people complaining about how long it was taking?
